The meaning of ' URBAN ' ?

I've been thinking of ... " What's urban ? urban study . .urban design ..
whatever ....
When we come to this point, we 've gota deal with complicated issues, planning , social, community, city,.. ... in a big scale.
We think of something big and we give solutions. ..

But I'm thinking . ...'urban' is not ' big '.
it's small. when u move in to city, u see crowded pp, u see traffic jam , u see high value land, lack of space, ..... .
i think all these things lead to on thing ...which is .. what i call ' small '.

u r b a n is s m a l l.

we really have to think of the use of small space. Look at Japan. there are some pretty good example solution over there.

if u don't agree with me , it's up to u. ..
but just think again. ..
we live in a big city with the population of almost 10 million ! Gosh ..!
Have u ever think about the use of the small street side on the way u go to work?

1.2 Issue of Interest

As the city is rapidly growing, lands become very expensive. Therefore, the left-over spaces under the flyovers are in grate value for sustainable development and social welfare of the community. Therefore I would like to propose educational facilities under the flyover for the youth and community development.
It is the alternative library or Library Park. I believe that it can be transform the dark side of the unused space into bright side.

Bangkok is one of the mega cities in the world ranked as the world's 15th largest metropolitan capital. Over the past decades, expressway and flyovers had been constructed in Bangkok for a better solution for traffic and transportation. One of the side effects is that there are many left over space under those flyovers. In the past, those areas become the home for homeless people and the place that create crimes. Surrounding neighborhood and community were scared of those spaces.

798 Space is part of the Creative Industry Zone project, which is an initiative fully funded by the federal government of China and covers Shanghai, Shenzhen, Qingdao, and other industrial areas of the country, in addition to Beijing.
The reason behind the bold investment by the Chinese government to steer these industrial cities towards creative-based economy is the awareness of the situation in which products that carry ‘Made in China’ label do not create the values they deserve in the global marketplace. A clear example of this is seen in the Chinese footwear industry that registers an enormous export volume of some 6.9 billion shoes to 200 countries worldwide. However, the Chinese-made shoes are often stereotyped as inferior products dumped into these markets, leading to imposition of embargoes against Chinese footwear by many importing nations.
Gearing the country towards creative economy has, therefore, become a key goal of Chinese economic development in the foreseeable future.

Hey friends, theres' gonna be a new high rise building in San Francisco. Check out the following articles : Cesar Pelli and his firm have won the rights to design what could become the tallest tower in San Francisco. Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects, teamed with developer Hines, were awarded exclusive negotiating rights yesterday to a choice site in downtown San Francisco owned by the Transbay Joint Powers Authority (TJPA), which seeks to rebuild the aging Transbay Terminal facility next door.

Pelli’s design is for a 1,200-foot-tall, obelisk-like tower of glass and steel alongside a new terminal for buses and commuter rail. The revamped terminal, which would stretch one-quarter mile and cross above two city streets, will be topped by a 5.4-acre park, designed by Peter Walker and Partners, of Berkeley, California, to emulate several of the state’s varied landscapes.

The Pelli scheme, and Hines’ $350 million bid for the site, triumphed over two rival entries. Skidmore, Owings & Merrill teamed with Rockefeller Group Development in proposing a 1,375-square-foot, torqued tower—narrow at its base, slender and diaphanous at the top—along with a terminal entered through a glassy hall. Rogers Harbour Stirk + Partners worked with SMWM and Forest City Enterprises on a plan that set an airy terminal alongside an Erector-Set-like glass tower topped by an enormous wind turbine.

WRNS Studio, of San Francisco, and Kendall/Heaton, of Houston, will assist Pelli in preparing final designs. The team has much work ahead—starting with the fact that it’s still unclear what sized tower will be allowed on the site, which is currently zoned for 550 feet. San Francisco’s planning department is in the early stages of studying whether or not to allow for taller buildings in the Transbay district, which is south of Market Street in the city’s downtown.

One of the limitations of relying on images to explain architecture is that the practice can sometimes encourage viewers to see buildings primarily as objects. And when viewed only in two dimensions, such as in photos on a printed page, the work of some architects looks a lot like seductive sculpture. Zaha Hadid’s assertive buildings would fall into this camp. But the stations that the London-based Hadid has designed for the Nordpark Cable Railway in Innsbruck, Austria, demonstrate that her work is not just about making isolated sensual objects. The project confirms that she is also concerned with creating fluid connections between buildings and their sites, and with linking to the larger surrounding environment.
Hadid’s four stations and her 820-foot-long, cable-stayed bridge, all completed late last year, define a route that transports skiers, snowboarders, hikers, and local residents from just outside the medieval center of the city, over the River Inn, to the hamlet of Hungerburg, about 950 feet above Innsbruck. The route, just over a mile long, is one piece of a larger, approximately $80 million project to replace and expand a series of antiquated lifts connecting the city with the summit of the Nordkette Mountain range defining the northern edge of this narrow valley.
Describing the stations as “contextual” may be a stretch (no Tyrolean bric-a-brac here), but their swoopy roofs were derived from examination of the forces that shaped this alpine region millennia ago, according to the architect. “We studied natural phenomena such as glacial moraines and ice movements,” says Hadid. The glass-clad structures, which, depending on the time of day and atmospheric conditions, seem milky white, cold blue, opaque, or glowing from within, do seem to be melting at a glacial pace, especially at the few points where each roof dips down to meet its reinforced-concrete base. The stations have softer and decidedly more organic contours than Hadid’s own sweeping Bergisel Ski Jump [RECORD, January 2003, page 76], which opened on the opposite side of the valley in 2002.
Inspiration did not only come from Innsbruck’s natural history, but also from the particulars of the individual station sites and their varied surroundings. For example, the zoomy entrance to the underground Congress Station seems shaped by the auto traffic that zips around it, while the Loewenhaus roof appears elongated by the flow of the river it sits alongside. The Alpenzoo Station is poised for takeoff from its perch atop a 65-foot-tall tower embedded into its wooded slope, and Hungerburg’s winged shelter hovers over a man-made plateau to frame spectacular views of the city and the opposite mountain range. Each station has its own context, topography, altitude, and circulation, says Hadid.

So as a students, u guys have to take responsible to improve, develop and preserve Myanmar architecture always.

Every nation of the world has designated its new year day in accordance with its custom and tradition. To welcome the new year, New Year Festivals are held. In fact new year festival is a traditional cultural festival.For the Myanmars, New Year Day falls in the month of Tagu. Tagu is the first month of the 12 months of Myanmar calendar. Tagu corresponds to April. Myanmars hold new year festival or Thingyan Festival in Tagu. Thingyan festival is also called Atar festival."Thingyan" means change- changing from one place to another. "Atar" means the period or time during which the old year is changed into new year.The time of Thingyan Festival is extremely warm.What everyone needs at such time is water. Since water can cool down the warmth, the Myanmars celebrate Thingyan Festival by sprinkling or pouring water on each other. Water washes away the dirt and fifth and cleans up everything. In pouring water on each other, ill will, evils and dangers of the old year are cleansed and new year will bring peace, prosperity and happiness.

As a neighbouring country, Thailand also have that festival known as Songkran festival. The traditional greeting is "สวัสดีปีใหม่" (sawatdee pi maï), basically "Happy New Year". "Sawatdee" = hello or good bye (Romanized spellings may vary, i.e. "sawadee" or "sawasdee").

These days are Songkran holidays. I've spent my time a day in Assumption University Suavanabhumi Campus. When the school is closed, there's only some people around and the university is a bit quite. However it didn't deduct the impact of Au architecture. A new Greek campus in Thailand ( hee hee as some people say) is coming out from ground with pride. Having developed a reputation for precisely detailed, exquisitely refined buildings, the Tokyo-based firm SANAA faced a very different kind of challenge with the New Museum in Lower Manhattan: Design a building for an anti-establishment museum in a scruffy-but-gentrifying part of town. Do it on a tight budget. And be careful, because the critics are weary of museums that are either formal extravagances or dull containers. Against the odds, SANAA, headed by Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa, has delivered a building that pleases both the critics and the public.

Its New Museum, which rises seven stories on the Bowery, points the neighborhood in a new direction—out of a previous era of flophouses and gin mills and toward a time of creative engagement. Whether by design or coincidence, its off-kilter arrangement of stacked boxes alludes to a moment of instability—in New York’s cultural scene, economic future, and demographic mix. Instead of glossing over the city’s reckoning with unsettling forces, the New Museum brings it front and center—an attitude that seems just right for an organization founded in 1977 by a curator, Marcia Tucker, the day after she was fired by the Whitney Museum of American Art. For the next three decades, the New Museum bounced around Lower Manhattan, carrying out its mission to show provocative contemporary artwork.

The name of the project is ‘Revitalization / Renewing the old context of National Museum area’’. The program includes ‘National Theatre + King Rama 9 Museum + Tourist Information Centre’. Time passes so fast. Season has changed.Now a new year has come. We say goodbye to 2007. We welcome 2008. We celebrate 2008. Then a thought came into my mind. Last new year 2007, we said good bye to 2006 and welcomed 2007. So next year at this time , we 'll say good by to the year we'd welcomed. What do we get out of this? What have we learn?
I think architecture is in everyday life. It's about space and time. So when the time has changed, what happen to the space? I asked myself that question and walked out from my house. I walked on the street. I was thinking while walking. When we build a new building or crate a new space, we praise about it. we welcome it. As the time goes by, we forget it. Sometimes we even abondon it. Why? Do we just really neglete it? Or do we just think like new year time? In fact , we are in the world that everything is coming so fast and going so fast. Consequently we had neglete many things around us, our buildings our built enviroments. As a result many unsoleved problems including urban factors occur. I think we should love and keep our built enviroment for the common wealth being.
Architecture is not for entainment or anything. It's for human needs. So this year, let's contribute something good to our sociey thorugh architecture. Let's keep our built enviroment growth. Happy architecture 2008!

The Hill House, by Johnston MarkLee Architects [who’s site is pretty siiick, by the way], was designed for an irregular hillside plot in Pacific Palisades, CA. The project strives to define a new method of site and zoning specific hillside development, limiting the building’s footprint on the hill while maximizing interior space.

The Hill House is designed under conditions generated by modern problems of building on the hillside. The site, an irregular shaped lot situated on an uneven downhill slope, offers panoramic views of Santa Monica Canyon. The design of the house utilizes the restriction of hillside and zoning ordinance to create a spatial and structural opportunity - adopting the zoning envelope as a building form. The dynamic form minimizes distinction between roof and wall planes while maximizing the distinction between interior and exterior [from the Johnston MarkLee homepage].

The project has won several design awards, including the PA Award 2001, Honor Award: AIA Next LA 2004, and the 2006 AIA LA Design Honor Award.

Day lighting

Day lighting is the controlled admission of natural light into a space through windows to reduce or eliminate electric lighting. By providing a direct link to the dynamic and perpetually evolving patterns of outdoor illumination, day lighting helps create a visually stimulating and productive environment for building occupants, while reducing as much as one-third of total building energy costs.
In large measure, the art and science of proper day lighting design is not so much how to provide enough daylight to an occupied space, but how to do so without any undesirable side effects. It involves more than just adding windows or skylights to a space. It is the careful balancing of heat gain and loss, glare control, and variations in daylight availability. For example, successful day lighting designs will invariably pay close attention to the use of shading devices to reduce glare and excess contrast in the workspace. Additionally, window size and spacing, glass selection, the reflectance of interior finishes and the location of any interior partitions must all be evaluated.
Benefits of Day lighting
Day lighting has the potential to significantly improve life-cycle cost, increase user productivity, reduce emissions, and reduces operating costs:
• Improved Life-Cycle Cost: At an estimated incremental first cost increase of from $0.50 to $0.75 per square foot of occupied space for dimmable ballasts, fixtures and controls, daylighting has been shown to save from $0.05 to $0.20 per square foot annually [in 1997 $].
• Increased User Productivity: Daylight enlivens spaces and has been shown to increase user satisfaction and visual comfort leading to improved performance.
• Reduced Emissions: By reducing the need for electric consumption for lighting and cooling, the use of daylight reduces greenhouse gases and slows fossil fuel depletion.
• Reduced Operating Costs: Electric lighting accounts for 35 to 50 percent of the total electrical energy consumption in commercial buildings. By generating waste heat, lighting also adds to the loads imposed on a building's mechanical cooling equipment. The energy savings from reduced electric lighting through the use of daylighting strategies can directly reduce building cooling energy usage an additional 10 to 20 percent. Consequently, for many institutional and commercial buildings, total energy costs can be reduced by as much as one third through the optimal integration of daylighting strategies.
As with all energy-efficient design strategies, there are some costs associated with the use of day lighting. Designers must be sure to avoid glare and overheating when placing windows. More windows do not automatically result in more day lighting. That is, natural light has to be controlled and distributed properly throughout the workspace. Also, for cost savings to be realized, controls have to be in proper functioning order. Poor installation, commissioning, or Operations and Maintenance (O&M) practices can all lead to sub-optimum performance.

Advantages of Day lighting
First, since natural sunlight is free to the user, this system offers the potential for significant energy savings. And day lighting can be used to supplement a lighting system or even replace some systems.
Second, daylight is the most natural source of light. It has the most complete color spectrum and thus renders color better than any other light source.
Third, day lighting can actually make workers happier and more productive. Research has shown that an individual's productivity and general sense of well-being is directly linked to the amount of daylight exposure.
And fourth, the presence of daylight usually makes the space more visually interesting.
Disadvantages of Day lighting
One of the major disadvantages to day lighting is that sunlight entering a building adds to the costs of cooling. However, this heat gain can be minimized by using double glazing, low UV emission coatings, tinting, shading or louvers.
Excessive brightness causes three types of glare:
1) Disability glare: caused by direct intense light
2) Discomfort glare: caused by ling term glare from windows and light fitting which are
too bright compard with the task being viewed
3) Reflected glare: seen in polished surfaces or in display screen equipment
Day lighting Concepts
It is important to appreciate that the day lighting design process involves the integration of many disciplines including architectural, mechanical, electrical, and lighting. These design team members need to be brought into the process early to ensure that day lighting concepts and ideas are carried throughout the project.
1. An awareness of basic visual acuity and performance issues is essential to an effective day lighting design.
• Veiling Reflections: Veiling reflections of high brightness light sources off specular (shiny) surfaces obscure details by reducing contract. They should be avoided, particularly where critical visual tasks occur.
• Distribution: Introduce as much controlled daylight as deep as possible into a building interior. The human eye can adjust to high levels of luminance as long as it is evenly distributed. In general, light which reaches a task indirectly (such as having bounced from a white wall) will provide better lighting quality than light which arrives directly from a natural or artificial source.
• Glare: The aim of an efficient day lighting design is not only to provide illuminance levels sufficient for good visual performance, but also to maintain a comfortable and pleasing atmosphere. Glare, or excessive brightness contrast within the field of view, is an aspect of lighting that can cause discomfort to occupants. The human eye can function quite well over a wide range of luminous environments, but does not function well if extreme levels of brightness are present in the same field of view.
• Variety: Some contrast in brightness levels may be desirable in a space for visual effectiveness. Dull uniformity in lighting can lead to tiredness and lack of attention—neither of which is compatible with a productive environment. Often times a good day lighting solution will integrate a "blast" of beam daylight in a circulation area for visual interest and to help lead occupants through a building. The human eye is naturally attracted to this bright area and can be useful in guiding people down an otherwise banal corridor.
Design Recommendations
A number of design strategies should be understood and explored during the design process. These strategies are briefly described below.
• Increase perimeter daylight zones—extend the perimeter footprint to maximize the usable day lighting area.
• Allow daylight penetration high in a space. Windows located high in a wall or in roof monitors and clerestories will result in deeper light penetration and reduce the likelihood of excessive brightness.
• Reflect daylight within a space to increase room brightness. A light shelf, if properly designed, has the potential to increase room brightness and decrease window brightness.
• Slope ceilings to direct more light into a space. Sloping the ceiling away form the fenestration area will help increase the surface brightness of the ceiling further into a space.
• Avoid direct beam daylight on critical visual tasks. Poor visibility and discomfort will result if excessive brightness differences occur in the vicinity of critical visual tasks.
• Filter daylight. The harshness of direct light can be filtered with vegetation, curtains, louvers, or the like, and will help distribute light.
• Understand that different building orientations will benefit from different day lighting strategies; for example light shelves which are effective on south façades are often ineffective on the east or west elevations of buildings.
There are two major ways to deliver daylight to the workplane. First is Top lighting. Top lighting is a process by which natural light enters a space through an aperture or opening in the ceiling of the top floor of a building. Skylights provide top lighting. Other forms of top lighting include clerestory windows, light boxes, and sawtooth roof monitors. It provides the most uniform distribution of light across the workplane. And, because the light comes from above, it provides better visual comfort.
Side lighting is the second day lighting technique. The sunlight enters the space through a window instead of a skylight. This type of system delivers more light horizontally than vertically. So, glare control and overall visual comfort is not as good. However, this approach makes good economic sense for corner rooms and buildings with large perimeter areas.
Light can be studied on many different levels by different people. As architects, we will be able to give form to buildings through different lighting techniques; all are defined under the artificial and natural types. Although artificial light has given architects and designers new opportunities to define their forms, architecture had evolved for thousands of years in response to the contribution of light from the sun. Even more importantly, humans and animals have evolved for hundreds of thousands of years with influence from the sun, their main source of energy. The human eye has accustomed itself to solar illumination and has adapted the way it reacts to it in order to get the most from it. Not surprisingly, artificial light will have to go a long way to match up with its natural counterpart. It has been shown that, in some instances, artificial light has to produce twice the illumination that sunlight does in order to be as efficient for certain tasks. Also, day lighting can reduce the energy consumption of a building substantially if understood correctly. For instance, electric lights account for approximately 20-25% of the total electrical energy use in the U.S. Indirectly, the heat produced from these electric lights have an impact on cooling equipment. Apparently, as a rule of thumb, each unit of electric light contributes to an additionnal1/2 unit of electricity for space conditioning.
